Special cases
Zellige:
Zellige can be used outdoors only if sheltered, such as in covered patios or on protected walls. It is not recommended for areas directly exposed to rain, frost, or significant temperature variations.
Terracotta:
Terracotta is ideal for sheltered or semi-sheltered outdoor areas. For areas exposed to water or frost, use high-density terracotta and apply a water-repellent or oil-repellent treatment. The substrate must be stable, well-drained, and protected from permanent moisture.
Zellige:
Zellige can be used for flooring in low to moderate traffic areas, such as residential interiors, small shops, or bathrooms. Installation requires double-gluing, thin joints (1–2 mm), and a water-repellent treatment. Not recommended for outdoor floors.
Terracotta:
Well-suited for residential and commercial floors with light to moderate traffic: living rooms, kitchens, patios, shops, halls. Requires double-gluing, 3–5 mm joints, mandatory water-repellent treatment, and regular maintenance to preserve patina. Avoid areas with standing water or heavy industrial environments.
Zellige:
Yes, if certain conditions are met: the substrate must be perfectly waterproof (SPEC), a surface treatment must be applied, and joints must be properly protected.
Terracotta:
Possible on walls and floors if properly treated: waterproof substrate (SPEC), water-repellent before and after installation, protected joints. Water does not damage the clay itself, but its porosity requires serious protection.
Zellige & Terracotta:
Compatible with low-temperature underfloor heating (< 28–30°C).
Requirements:
- Flexible adhesive C2S1
- Gradual temperature increase
- Non-rigid joints
Terracotta:
Megzo terracotta is 100% natural and can be used for: trays, tables, niches, backsplashes, decorative surfaces.
Avoid: direct contact with flames, very hot dishes placed directly, cutting with knives.
Technical specifications & installation guide
Zellige:
Megzo zellige is made from fine natural clay and covered with vitrified mineral glaze. Thickness: typically 11–12 mm. Weight: 18–22 kg/m². Slight dimensional variations (±1.5 mm).
Terracotta:
Megzo terracotta is made from natural red or ochre clay, slowly fired between 900–1050°C. Thickness: 14–20 mm. Weight: 24–30 kg/m². Natural tone variations: ±10%.
Due to their artisanal production, zellige and terracotta do not comply with industrial CE/ISO standards applicable to calibrated tiles.
However, Megzo applies rigorous quality control: dimensional checks, density tests, visual inspections (texture, cracks, tonality), batch firing.
Frost resistance, water absorption, or strength tests can be performed upon request.
Installation:
- Double-gluing recommended
- Joints: 1–2 mm for zellige, 3–5 mm for terracotta
- Apply water-repellent/oil-repellent treatment after installation
Maintenance:
- Cleaning: black soap, neutral cleaner, warm water
- Avoid: bleach, acids, harsh detergents
- Renew water-repellent treatment every 2–5 years
Aging and patina:
Megzo tiles develop natural patina: deeper colors, micro-marks of use, variation according to light and maintenance. This aging gives them their authentic charm.
Zellige
Megzo zellige is a fine clay tile originating from the Fez region, crafted according to traditional expertise. Each tile is shaped, cut, and glazed entirely by hand, then naturally dried before being fired in optimized artisanal kilns. The glaze, applied manually, gives zellige its depth, brilliance, and unique nuances. Due to this handcrafted process, each piece presents slight variations in tone, shine, texture, or flatness characteristics that define the authenticity of genuine zellige.
Customization includes reproducing vintage shades, developing new colors from a sample or photo, and creating a 1–2 m² prototype before full production.
Over time, zellige develops a subtle patina, and its brilliance may vary depending on light exposure and use, enhancing its artisanal charm.
Terracota
Megzo terracotta is a natural clay tile sourced from the Middle Atlas, entirely shaped using artisanal methods. Each piece is molded, pressed, or hand-extruded, air-dried, then slowly fired in artisanal kilns. Unglazed and slightly porous, it displays natural tone variations, textures, and small irregularities that reflect handmade work. Each tile is unique, bringing warmth and character to every surface.
Megzo offers extensive customization: custom mold creation, clay tone adjustment, special finishes (aged, brushed, patinated), and prototype production (1–2 m²) before project validation.
